Why You Must Consider An Upgrade To Windows 10
Migrating computer assets to a new operating system takes research, planning, manpower, and time. The labor intensity and unknown factors involved in these types of projects can make it attractive for IT departments and organizations to put them on hold. Yet, delaying important or critical updates can lead to more costly and time-consuming problems. When a software developer ends support for an existing operating system, it can leave systems vulnerable to cybersecurity attacks. Not updating systems to a new operating system can also impact the functionality of other applications and make it difficult to find compatible peripheral devices such as printers. Since Microsoft has announced plans to end support for its Windows 7 operating system on January 14th, 2020, it is imperative that organizations start updating systems to Windows 10.

Without continuing support from Microsoft, systems with Windows 7 will no longer receive critical updates that fix security flaws and other functional problems. After January 14th, 2020, systems that have not been updated to Windows 10 will become more vulnerable to malware, ransomware, hacking, and other cybersecurity-related attacks. In an organization that maintains multiple systems on an enterprise-scale, leaving assets open to these types of vulnerabilities could wreak havoc that takes months to clean up. Leaving systems vulnerable to cybersecurity incidents could also result in legal liabilities and other repercussions that might not emerge for months or even years after the incidents.
Besides an increased risk for cybersecurity attacks, delaying or refusing to upgrade systems to Windows 10 could lead to problems with other applications. When a major operating system is no longer supported, other software developers tend to follow suit. This means existing applications and web-based platforms may also become vulnerable to security threats as the developers shift towards making their applications compatible with Windows 10. Support from other applications’ developers on the Windows 7 operating system will also become obsolete and the applications may no longer work as well. While it is possible that some older applications and older versions will not work on Windows 10, options like compatibility mode and updating to versions designed for Windows 10 exist.
Yet another serious implication of delaying an upgrade to Windows 10 is the possibility that peripheral devices will stop functioning and replacements will be difficult to find. Manufacturers of devices such as printers and scanners release driver updates to ensure the devices work with operating systems. Printers and other peripheral devices that currently work on Windows 7 may stop working once driver updates come through for Windows 10. In addition, new printers and other devices will be made to work with newer operating systems like Windows 10. As peripheral devices age out and need to be replaced, it will be difficult if not impossible to find replacements that will function with Windows 7.
